Melhus is a small town in central Norway, and is about 20 km south of Trondheim. The church is located a small distance outside the town, and is surrounded by a picturesque graveyard.
Building a new organ was an exciting challenge for us, because it presented an exceptionally difficult type of problem. The parish of Melhus had been thinking for a long time about replacing the dilapidated Jørgensen organ with a new one, and with a view to building a new organ had acquired some beautiful stops from an old Scottish organ originating in Aberdeen; these had been carefully stored on the side gallery in the church.
The task facing us as organ builders was to integrate these Scottish pipes, as well as some beautiful voices from the Jørgensen organ, in as convincing a way as pos-sible into a brand new organ. The result is a Kuhn organ with a most attractive sound and with Swiss, Scottish and Norwegian roots.
Stylistically, the design of the case tends towards a preceding organ which August Nielsen built for the Melhus church in 1892. The simple, neo-Gothic case fits perfectly into the beautiful church interior. The observer sees in the organ an old acquaintance that has stood in this church for years.
