A contemporary all-rounder

For the construction of a new church organ, historic examples always point the way. However, simply copying a suitable organ would not be very successful. On the one hand, because the music to be performed on a liturgical instrument comes from different periods and styles, and a church organ should be playable in versatile ways if possible. On the other hand, there are in general also clear requirements concerning modernity and singularity of a new organ. For St. Rupert's Church, traditional craftsmanship and, at the same time, a proud and contemporary all-rounder were required.

When considering the specification of this organ with 25 stops, we felt it was important to be able to play trio and cantus firmus melodies based on chorales in many variations. An independent pedal organ with a clear sound was a matter of course; a warm sounding, impressive full organ provides proper ecclesiastical dignity. In order to achieve an ideal result tonally and aesthetically, it is vital that we consider the architectural and acoustic characteristics of the room and turn it to advantage - an art that we at Kuhn Organ Builders have cultivated continuously for more than 140 years.

It will never be possible simply to order an organ of high artistic quality from a catalogue. Building a new organ is always a dignified project where all aspects have to be elaborated; it has to be carefully planned and accurately accomplished. - It is a unique experience that demands commitment, competence and affection for the work from all involved. Finally it is also always a joint endeavour of clients and organ builders, based on trust, which culminates in pleasure, gratefulness and the continuing of a tradition that is thousands of years old.
