Acoustic radiance in a crematorium
As a place of mourning and remembrance, a crematorium should radiate a particular ambience. Besides a fitting architecture, the 'right’ organ is of prime importance; a harmony between room and organ should be achieved.
Sound, shape and colour of the new instrument for the crematorium in Langenthal were planned with regard for the architectural features of the room as well as its function. The relatively small niche available on the organ gallery restricted the height of the instrument. Therefore, we placed the organ elegantly within the curve of the ceiling, the edge of the casing following the shape of the arch. In order to make the width of the organ appear slimmer in proportion we accentuated the vertical dimension and arranged the facade in sections. The counter-rotating arrangement of the lips and the sweeping pipe shades present a harmonic counterpoint against the dominance of the arched ceiling.
The organ's colour is also well fitting to this small room: the blue-grey glaze of the façade stands in vibrant contrast with the earthy tones of the Cuno-Amiet picture on the opposite side of the room.
For its size, the organ is equipped with a relatively wide range of foundation stops; scaling and voicing are in keeping with the essentially chamber music characteristics of this instrument. Each manual is capable of taking on a solo or accompanying role. For a suitable, rather restrained tone production a moderate wind pressure is supplied. |
