Italianità in Berne

The construction of an «Italian» organ in Nydegg Church in Berne represented in several respects a real challenge for the organ builder.

Stylistically, the organ is in the manner of the instruments built by the Antegnati family, one of the most important families of organ builders of the Italian Renaissance.

Thus, to a certain extent, it meant that the German Swiss organ builders had to undertake a journey into the past, and to learn a foreign «organ language». Of course, the organ was to have spring chests of Lombardy construction, and possess further characteristics of this type of organ.

The size of the organ was naturally limited by the available space in the church, next to the choir arch. However, the requirement was to build a 12 ' - instrument (FF, GG, AA to c''') with split keys d#/eb and g#/ab. In addition, a so-called «Musiziergedackt» was requested in the lower case of the organ, enabling the necessary pitch and temperament to be easily adjusted in order to accompany a choir and instruments.

Thus Nydegg Church was granted a second organ, which together with Goll organ of 1953 provides a vast range of musical possibilities.
