The organ of St-Jean owes its construction and character mostly to Dr. Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965). He designed the organ in 1912, and charged «Dalstein & Härpfer», his company of preference at that time, with the construction. The delivery in 1915 was very difficult because Alsace-Lorraine had in the meantime become German and an enemy country. The blessing nevertheless took place successfully on 5 September 1915.

In its tonal scheme the organ remained almost untouched, apart from a few modifications in 1947 and 1962.

The organ was equipped with pneumatic actions, which was then modern. The complex system did not allow restoration in the narrow sense. In mutual agreement with the institute for the preservation of ancient monuments it was therefore decided to build completely new technical parts including slider chests with tracker actions. But the existing pipework was completely reused as were parts of the stops from 1947 and 1962. A pedal reed 16 ' with extension was added. The organ case which had been slightly modified was restored to its original state and repainted. The organ completely retained its special sound character, and represents an early authentic example of the Alsatian organ reform in accordance with Albert Schweitzer's wishes.
