The problem of erecting the organ in Porto required a special solution. A convincing placement of the instrument, with its 36 stops, on the back wall of the gallery was not possible, from an organ builder's viewpoint. The designer therefore considered the idea of the organ forming part of the balustrade. At first glance, however, can be misleading: this is not a small low balustrade organ, but a lavish symphonic instrument. The largest front pipe is the note E in the Principal(bass) 16 ' rank.

The console stands sideways on to the organ. Control of the organ's sound for the player has proved to be excellent. The console is a very modern design, and not only on the outside. The stop jamb with buttons and clearly visible on/off indicators for the stops are also constructed in contemporary style.

The Positif «historique» incorporates three ranks from a previous organ in English style. The Positiv is placed directly behind the organist and is therefore ideally suited for accompaniment on the gallery (choirs, soloists). As a further «memento» of the old organ, a number of decorated front pipes were placed in the side façade of the organ (see enlarged view of the façade).
