A change in Saint-Loup
The Deaconess Hospital of Saint-Loup near Pompaples was founded in 1852. The Deaconess community, that is still centred there, has had to renovate its mother house. The chapel belonging to the hospital was completely redesigned and adapted to the present-day requirements of the community.
The old Kuhn organ, dating from 1944, no longer suited the new interior design; it was carefully dismantled and has now found a home in Romania.
The new organ is distinctly smaller than its predecessor, and with its case of pale maple it fits perfectly into the beautiful, newly designed interior of the chapel. For the design of the front we have used various motifs from the semicircular windows, thus achieving a clear reference to the architecture of the chapel. The limited height beneath the newly constructed gallery and the similarly restricted depth mean that the new organ is relatively wide.
The technical layout of this organ is simple. In the centre, above the console, is the positive in a swell box. Next to it at the side are the windchests shared by the great organ and the pedal organ, divided into C side and C# side. The blower is located in an adjoining room behind the organ.
The specification was designed by an organ expert, Michel Jordan. It comprises 15 stops, and clearly has its roots in the French tradition of the 18th century. The specification is wonderfully suited to the presentation of the literature from this period. Moreover, the positive in a swell box extends the variety of sound the organ is capable of, enabling it also to become a flexible accompanying instrument.
