Organ for the transept Querkirche

This classically inspired church was built in 1816 - 18 by the architect Hans Conrad Stadler. After several alterations, the last being in 1978, the current renovation is oriented towards the original spatial identity of the building. Led by the architect Paul Bissegger, this renovation has been undertaken in close cooperation with the City's department for the preservation of historic buildings.

For the first 100 years of its existence the church had no organ. Therefore, under the renovation plan, that is oriented towards the original situation, the new organ is intended not to be «fitted» but to be well sited in the room as a free standing instrument.

This slim, two-manual instrument is carefully proportioned and adjusted to the interior of the church. The building owners established the maximum possible measurements of the new organ by means of models. The focus was on architectural criteria. For us, the organ builders, the exciting task was to develop a concept for the position and the sound of the organ that despite the relatively restricted proportions of the room, would meet the owners' wishes for an exceptional organ, full of character and with a beautiful sound.
